And the cut-flower industry is no exception: that is why horticulture professionals have sought to guarantee both the quality and the origin of their flowers through a short-chain supply model, which allows them to prioritize seasonal flowers. In short: a return to responsible agriculture.
Inspired by horticulturists in the Anglo-Saxon world, the Slow Flower movement aims to promote a production and purchasing cycle that is not only more environmentally friendly but also more beneficial to both consumers and producers.
In fact, the Slow Flower approach helps support local businesses by prioritizing local growers, while also ensuring a higher-quality product for customers, since the flowers travel less and therefore suffer less from packaging. Simply put: flowers that come from closer by and last longer!
Collectives and a label
In France, the idea is beginning to gain traction thanks to organic farms such as the Lescinquit farm in Brittany, which advocates for French self-sufficiency in flower production. Most of these initiatives are part of the “Fleur française” collective, which lists the organizations working to promote a return to authenticity and locally sourced production.
The French government has even helped promote the production of French flowers, notably through the creation of the “Fleurs de France” label in 2015, which makes it easy to identify flowers produced by French growers and nursery owners.
