Put a bouquet of flowers on your nightstand!
With your head in a fog, your eyes glued shut, and a more or less intense feeling of sadness, what’s on your mind? Yes, the alarm clock. Guilty of ruining the lives of millions of French people, the alarm clock is cruel in its simplicity: it forces you to go from a state of absolute comfort to the active, bustling rhythm of daily life. If you’re among those who see “getting out of bed” as pure torture, you’ve certainly tried several techniques to make this ordeal easier: gradual lighting, waking up to birdsong, or even analyzing your sleep cycles. But have you tried flowers?
A team of researchers from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital conducted a behavioral study to examine the effects of flowers on our waking process.
I find my bouquet of flowers
Researcher Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., who led this project, said, “The morning blues is, ultimately, a real, tangible phenomenon, since positive moods—such as joy, friendliness, and warmth—don’t emerge until much later in the day.” She adds, “When we placed a bouquet of flowers on their nightstands, we observed a real spike in the participants’ moods.”
The experimental protocol was as follows: Dr. Etcoff’s team placed several bouquets in strategic locations in rooms frequently used in the morning: the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. In response, participants expressed positive feelings about seeing flowers as soon as they woke up, particularly in the kitchen. The final results of the study showed that flowers have a positive impact on morning emotions, , resulting in a lasting reduction in anxiety and an increase in compassion and empathy.
The icing on the cake: the good mood sparked by flowers has an indirect positive effect on the rest of the household, thanks to the phenomenon of mood contagion. Flowers not only make you happy but also help spread those positive emotions to those around you.
In any case, there are few reasons not to have flowers in your home (except for allergies). But it’s now scientifically proven: flowers will make you (even) happier. Trust us—give it a try!
