5 Tips for Preserving Your Cut Flowers
Have you just bought a bouquet of flowers from an artisan florist? That’s a great start, and we hope it brings you joy, love, or comfort. But now you need to take care of it so you can enjoy it for as long as possible! Don’t worry—the Sessile editorial team has put together some care tips to help you preserve your cut flowers.
1 – Change the water regularly
When you receive your flowers, or when you return home from the store, you should put them in a vase. Clean the vase thoroughly to remove as many bacteria as possible. To help your flowers bloom, choose the right container. Our advice: choose a vase that is at least half the height of the stems.
2 – Measure the water carefully and change it regularly
As soon as the water starts to get stale, don’t hesitate to change it. Sessile recommends changing the water at least every two days so your flowers will stay fresh as long as possible. Use fresh water; as for the amount, filling the vase two-thirds full should do the trick!

3 – Cut off the stems and remove the leaves
We’re not asking you to become a florist, but a little trimming is essential for keeping a bouquet fresh. To enjoy the beauty of your arrangement for longer, trim the stems diagonally every two days by 2 to 3 centimeters using scissors or a clean knife: this helps the flowers absorb water more effectively, allowing them to rehydrate more easily.
Here’s another quick tip: Be sure to remove any leaves that are hanging below the waterline—they rot quickly and prevent the flowers from staying properly hydrated. You should do this as soon as you put your flowers in a vase!
4 – Choose a suitable location
To keep your flowers looking their best, you need to ensure they have optimal conditions. While direct sunlight helps flowers bloom more quickly, too much sunlight causes them to wilt faster. Conversely, a room that’s too dark isn’t good for their health.
Similarly, flowers don't do well in temperatures that are too extreme, so avoid placing them near radiators or electronic devices! The ideal temperature is between 18 and 22°C.
We therefore recommend placing your flowers in a bright, temperate room, protecting them from direct sunlight and drafts. It’s all about balance!
