Don't get the flower colors wrong anymore

Being an artisan florist means being able to give shape to a wish, a request, or a desire. To do this, artisan florists are trained—and, above all, passionate. No one expects you to be an enthusiast or an expert, but color is the foundation. Here’s an overview.

"Did you know that yellow roses symbolize friendship, honey?"

Giving a yellow rose to your sweetheart isn't the end of the world—especially since the other person certainly won't hold this minor slip-up against you. Nevertheless, the color of flowers—just like their scent and shape—conveys a powerful message and the feelings associated with them.

Red for passion—the real kind

There’s no message clearerthan giving a red rose —it leaves little room for interpretation! Red symbolizes passionate love, seduction, and desire. The red rose is the most classic choice, but you can get more creative: a bouquet of gerberas or redcarnations will make you stand out (and cost less).

Pink for sensitivity and innocence

Pink flowers evoke a more romantic and playful world of love. Traditionally associated with femininity, pink flowers are seen as delicate, charming, and gentle. As with red, carnations and roses are perfect choices, as are chrysanthemums and peonies.

Orange for sunny moments

The color orange symbolizes pure happiness and joy. By giving a bouquet of orange flowers, you convey a sense of freedom and opportunity, as well as a touch of adventure. Orange zinnias, marigolds, and nasturtiums are excellent choices for creating bouquets with orange as the dominant color.

Yellow for true friendship

Friendship, filial love, and affection are the key themes associated with yellow flowers. Give a bouquet of daffodils to your best friend and a bouquet of lilacs to your mom, whom you forget to call far too often. Adding a yellow daffodil to a bouquet of red flowers for your sweetheart will make a wonderful impression.

Green for nature lovers

If you’re giving flowers, it means the person you’re giving them to already has a fairly healthy relationship with nature. Drive the point home with a bouquet dominated by green. Green symbolizes a connection to the environment (what a surprise!) but also good luck. This color tends to highlight the bouquet’s natural structure, so choose a distinctive flower like the arum lily. Note that green pairs particularly well with purple, but we’ll cover that in a future article.

Serene Blue

Deep blue, such as the blue of irises, represents calm and serenity of mind. It encourages reflection and meditation and has the same effect as gazing at an azure blue sky. Because of their relaxing nature, blue flowers are also appropriate for wishing someone a speedy recovery.

    Refined and charming purple

The purple of flowers is a very powerful color. A bouquet of purple flowers will catch everyone’s eye and make others jealous. It symbolizes elegance, refinement, and distinction. The occasion must therefore be appropriate (stay tuned—an article is coming soon). Orchids and lavender are good choices for purple flowers.

Special mention for the multicolored flower. The effect shown below was achieved by splitting the stems of white roses and dipping each stem in food coloring. At Sessile, we don't approve!

You’re now fully equipped to give flowers with confidence. Save monochromatic bouquets for special occasions, since the arrangement is just as important as the flower’s color. You can let your creativity run wild by choosing a mixed bouquet (though we recommend trusting our fantastic florists).

While you're here… At Sessile, our daily goal is to showcase artisanal florists. If you'd like to buy a bouquet from your favorite artisanal florist, or simply learn more about the Sessile concept, come visit us!
