Eternal Roses: Everything You Need to Know

Have you heard of eternal roses? They’re preserved roses that are placed under a glass dome so they can be kept for years. If you’re a fan of fairy tales, you’ve probably thought of the eternal rose from Beauty and the Beast. It’sa romantic gift that symbolizes eternal and passionate love. In this article, the Sessile editorial team tells you everything there is to know about eternal roses.

What is an eternal rose?

In recent years, we’ve seen a real resurgence in the popularity of preserved plants and dried flowers, foremost among which is, of course, one of the most romantic gifts you can give: the eternal rose. Contrary to popular belief, eternal roses are not artificial flowers, but rather natural flowers that have been treated.

As the name suggests, an eternal rose is a rose that has undergone a stabilization process to slow its aging and preserve it in a static state. To stabilize the rose, florists use a solution of vegetable glycerin mixed with food coloring and nutrients. The stabilization process can take between 2 and 5 days.

To prevent eternal roses from being damaged by dust or moisture, they are usually covered with a glass dome, which also lends the eternal roses a magical touch.

Generally speaking, people give eternal roses to express the depth of their love for their partner. It’s the perfect gift for your partner’sbirthday, Valentine’s Day, a wedding anniversary, or to make a romantic date even more special.

How long does an eternal rose last, and how do you care for it?

As the name suggests, an eternal rose is made to last: while a cut rose will brighten up your home for one to two weeks, eternal roses can continue to shine for several years.

On average, it is estimated that an eternal rose has a lifespan of 3 to 5 years, depending on the preservation process it underwent. Note that to keep an eternal rose for years, you don’t need to water it, which is a major advantage.

However, you’ll still need to take basic care of them to ensure they last as long as possible. For example, choose the right place to store them: preferably a room with a moderate temperature, and avoid extreme temperatures. Despite their protective glass dome, preserved roses are extremely sensitive to humidity: be very mindful of this factor.

Occasionally, the petals of your eternal roses may be covered with a thin layer of dust or a few drops of water: if this happens, feel free to remove the glass dome and gently wipe the petals with a dry cloth. We recommend doing this about once a month.

Finally, our last piece of advice is to avoid exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible: this could cause the vibrant color of your preserved rose to fade.
